Libraries Launch New Website!

by beth 8/23/2008 4:39:00 PM

We have a new look and a new URL!  We are proud to launch our new website, which has been many months in the making and has taken a lot of hard work from many people. And it's all running on a shiny new server, which translates into a smooth web experience for you!

Visit our new site: http://library.depaul.edu

We know that this will be a big change for those who are familiar with our old site, but we feel that the increased functionality and updated design of our new site will ease the transition.

New features include:

- Increased access to key research resources on the library home page
- Improved interlibrary loan via our new ILLiad service
- Ability to search the library site
- Redesigned research guides

As you test out our new site, let us know what you think! http://library.depaul.edu/Services/feedback.aspx

I-Share System Maintenance: offline Sunday morning

by beth 8/21/2008 7:25:00 PM

On Sunday, August 24th, the I-Share Catalog and DePaul's Library Catalog will be down from 12:01am to 2:00am for server maintenance. During this time, more memory will be added to the I-Share server that runs the Oracle database manager. No access to Voyager staff clients or public access interfaces (WebVoyage or VuFind) to local or the Universal Catalog will be available during this time.

We will update you if this event runs longer than forecasted or has unexpected consequences.

Thank you for your patience while this upgrade is completed!

I Heart Gapersblock.com

by lorie 8/20/2008 2:40:00 PM

This Chicago “web publication” highlights a variety of topics related to city life in distinct blogs including Merge on general issues, Slowdown with a calendar of events, Detour with weekly features, Transmission on music, Drive Thru on food, and Book Club on literary events, as well as editorial columns and a stunning photo on Rearview.

My favorite story about this blog happened in 2006. Some readers of Gapersblock were complaining online about This American Life’s move to New York City to begin the Showtime television series. Among all the comments posted in this conversation was one from Ira Glass himself explaining the move. You know you’ve found a blog worth reading when a local personality both reads the blog and responds to its news thread.

If you read this blog and Chicagoist, consider yourself an expert on the city.

Great Expectations

by michelle 8/19/2008 9:16:00 AM

Do you have Great Expectations?
We do.
In fact, we now have the first incarnation of this Charles Dickens classic as serialized in the weekly journal, All the Year Round, which was also “conducted” or edited by Dickens himself. It is now possible to read about Pip and the gang in the highly anticipated weekly installments that characterized popular story-telling in the 1860’s. Equally engaging are the other stories, articles, and social gossip such as “Cheating at Cards,” “Election Time America,” Chinamen’s Dinners,” and “The Queen of the Blue Stockings” that sandwich each new chapter. And as with Miss Havisham and her wedding dress, this version of Great Expectations will spend the rest of its life in Special Collections Room 314 along with the rest of our premier Dickens collection.

I heart Movies in the Park

by beth 8/14/2008 2:56:00 PM

Feel like summer is passing you by way too quickly? If you're like me, you just realized that we are mid-way through August, and Autumn, unfortunately, is right around the corner. Want to take advantage of these great summer nights we're having while they're still around? Then grab a blanket and a picnic and check out Movies in the Park, sponsered by the Chicago Park District.

Movies in the Park are offered at most neighborhood parks, and best of all, they're free! Movies in the Park run from June through September, and more than 170 movies will be shown this summer, everything from summer classics, like Field of Dreams, to family favorites, like Shrek the Third. Now, get out there and have some fun already!

America's Favorite Pastime

by beth 8/8/2008 2:19:00 PM

If you're living in Chicago, chances are, baseball is a part of your life this summer. Whether you're a Cubs fan or a Sox fan, or just trying to avoid enthusiastic fans on the train, it's hard not to notice that the pennant race is heating up! And, with both teams currently in first place in their respective divisions, it's even more exciting this year...

But, did you know that on August 11, 1929, Babe Ruth became the first baseball player to hit 500 home runs in his career with a home run at League Park in Cleveland, Ohio? Just a little fun fact you can break out as you're sitting in the Cell tonight cheering for the Sox's against Boston!

I-Share catalog upgrade: offline overnight Thurs Aug 7

by courtney 8/7/2008 11:03:00 AM

Beginning at 5pm, Thursday August 7, the I-Share Catalog will be completely offline while the database is rebuilt to add the holdings of five new member libraries:

Adler School of Professional Psychology
Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Harrington College of Design
Principia College
Rush University

Except for Principia, which is located some 35 miles north of St. Louis in Elsah, Illinois, the other four newest I-Share libraries are all located in Chicago.

This outage is not expected to impact the DePaul library catalog. The work will be completed overnight Thursday and I-Share should be back online by 8am Friday, August 8.

Thanks for your patience while this upgrade is completed!
