I-Share catalog upgrade: offline overnight Thurs Aug 7

by courtney 8/7/2008 11:03:00 AM

Beginning at 5pm, Thursday August 7, the I-Share Catalog will be completely offline while the database is rebuilt to add the holdings of five new member libraries:

Adler School of Professional Psychology
Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Harrington College of Design
Principia College
Rush University

Except for Principia, which is located some 35 miles north of St. Louis in Elsah, Illinois, the other four newest I-Share libraries are all located in Chicago.

This outage is not expected to impact the DePaul library catalog. The work will be completed overnight Thursday and I-Share should be back online by 8am Friday, August 8.

Thanks for your patience while this upgrade is completed!

I'm about to graduate. What will my library privileges be as an alumni?

by courtney 6/6/2008 1:19:00 PM

First of all ... congratulations to this year's graduates!

The good news:

With your DePaul Alumni ID, you can still use all of DePaul’s online resources such as Books 24 X 7, Academic Search Premier, JSTOR and more, but you need to access them from the library computer labs, located near the reference desks at the Lincoln Park and Loop campus libraries. [Need directions? Hours?] You can also check out books, videos and music, renew online, and get the same great reference service (if we do say so ourselves...ahem).

The even better news:

You are automatically enrolled in the DePaul University Alumni Association upon graduation. All you have to do is get an Alumni ID; to do this, contact Alumni Relations:

  • Online: [Requires DePaul alumni username and password]
  • By telephone - (800) 437-1898

If you’ll be relocating to another city, most public libraries provide remote access to library databases. Also, bear in mind that many public universities allow on-site public access to online resources, since they are funded by taxpayers.

More information about Alumni library privileges is available at the Library Web site.

Once again, best wishes for a happy and prosperous future to all 2008 graduates, and we hope to continue to see many of you around the library!

I Heart LibX

Do you ever find yourself thinking...

'Does the library subscribe to this journal my professor wants me to use?'

'This book on Amazon looks like it might be useful - I wonder if the library has it so I don't have to buy it?'

'Sometimes finding the full text of an article from Google Scholar isn't as easy as it should be.'

If any of those sound familiar, I've got a browser plug-in for you: LibX. Available for Firefox and Internet Explorer, this plugin is customized especially for DePaul, and pops a handy little search bar across the top of your browser window so you can quickly and easily search the library catalog, or check on whether the library has the journal you need online or in print.

Even better, do this from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or many other sites -  you'll see a little DePaul icon next to book titles. Highlight any word or phrase in a web page and right click to search the library catalog for that item, or drag-and-drop onto the 'Scholar' button in the toolbar to generate a search in Google Scholar. Speaking of Google Scholar, results will have shiny 'find full text' buttons, so you're only one click away from finding out whether the library has what you're looking for.

Give it a try!
